Ashwaghanda- Withania somnifera-
In Ayurveda, Ashwagandha root is highly valued as an adaptogenic tonic (Sometimes written as ashwaganda) and has been used for thousands of years throughout Asia and still holds an important place in herbal formulations today. Educational info.-In Ayurveda it is a helpful sleep aid and used to balance various conditions that arise from 'vata dosha' imbalances. It is believed to encourage youth and vitality. Ashwagandha is traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine as an adaptogen and a nervine to help cope with stress and supports overall cognitive health. This is possibly one of best overall supportive herbs for balancing your body and reducing stress as well as the effects of stress.
All herbs I use are organic and locally grown, wildcrafted, or purchased from sustainable sources.
Ashwagandha is one of the most popular adaptogenic herbs. It is often called winter cherry or Indian ginseng as well.
It is a great herb for stamina, often used for fatigue due to nervous tension and overwork.
Ashwagandha helps to increase energy and endurance. It also helps the body overcome imbalances caused by both mental and physical stress as well as anxiety.
Ashwagandha is especially beneficial for people who are stressed-out. Rather than being stimulating like some other adaptogens, it has a mildly calming effect. This mild sedative helps to calm the mind yet enhances mental function and alleviates cloudy thinking. It also has muscle relaxing properties.
Ashwagandha is very effective for fatigue, nervous exhaustion and insomnia due to stress. It helps to encourage better sleep. Stress can disrupt the normal circadian rhythm which regulates the release of cortisol. This in turn can result in sleep problems.
Ashwagandha helps to rejuvenate the cells and strengthen immune function. It has a balancing effect for both an overactive or under active immune function. This is an important herb for recuperation and convalescence from serious illnesses.
Other benefits of Ashwagandha are anti-inflammatory properties. This is useful in cases of arthritis and joint pain. There are also antioxidant compounds called withanolides which are similar to ginsenosides found in another well known adaptogen called ginseng.
Finally, Ashwagandha is beneficial for those with hypothyroidism, however should not be used by those with hyperthyroidism. Also, since it is closely relate to tomatoes, peppers and potatoes, it should not be used by those sensitive to nightshade family plants.
Energetics & constituents: slightly warming, alkaloids, steroidal lactones, adaptogen
