A spirit bag is a necklace that has herbs sewn inside and is given to either man or woman to wear for protection. It usually has three herbs sewn inside. They are: Sweetgrass which brings good thoughts to you. Sage and cedar cleanses the person. Juniper berry: According to Navaho Legend (As told to me by a Navaho girl); Juniper Berry Seed: Once ‘Blessed’ by the Medicine man, Warriors placed one under their tongue to keep them safe in battle. Even today many Elders sew one onto their clothing.

Historical Background: A medicine bag (or "medicine bundle," as it is sometimes called) is a container for items believed to protect or give spiritual powers to its owner. Its size could be small enough to wear around the neck or a large bag with a long strap and carried like a "bandolier." The pouch itself was usually made out of an animal skin. Sinew or rawhide lace was usually used to sew the bag and be worn or hung. They could be plain looking or richly decorated. Of course, the size of the medicine pouch usually dictated what and how many "power objects" could be placed in it.

Medicine bags for either man or woman should be made from animal skin and contain power objects for healing. These listed here has the intent of 'Protection'. Most contain claws, feathers, rocks, bones, and herbs. Whatever you need will come to you. Crystals and stones were also put in bags. Medicine bags today are used to increase ones own spirituality and sacred power.
